Quyển sách này ghi chép rất công phu và tỉ mỉ về núi sông, khí hậu, hành chính, thành trì, cũng như về phong tục tập quán, tính cách và sinh hoạt của dân cư tại vùng đất Gia Định từ thời Nguyễn Hữu Cảnh vào kinh lược đất này từ năm 1698 cho đến những năm đầu thế kỷ XIX.
