Tô Vĩnh Diện sinh năm 1924, trong một gia đình nông dân nghèo ở thôn Dược Khê, xã Nông Trường, huyện Nông Cống (nay thuộc huyện Triệu Sơn), tỉnh Thanh Hóa. Tháng 4 năm 1953, quân đội ta thành lập các đơn vị pháo cao xạ đầu tiên để chuẩn bị cho trận đánh lớn – tiêu diệt Tập đoàn cứ điểm của địch ở Điện Biên Phủ. Tô Vĩnh Diện được điều về làm Tiểu đội trưởng một đơn vị pháo cao xạ. Trên đường kéo pháo tham gia chiến dịch, Tô Vĩnh Diện vì cố gắng cứu cho khẩu pháo khỏi bị rơi xuống vực nên đã hi sinh anh dũng, vào một ngày cuối đông rét buốt – ngày 28 tháng Chạp – giáp Tết Giáp Ngọ (tức 1 tháng 2 năm 1954).
