Thạch Lam tên thật là Nguyễn Tường Vinh, sau đổi là Nguyễn Tường Lân. Ngoài tên Thạch Lam, ông còn có bút danh khác như Việt Sinh, Thiện Sỹ. Thạch Lam sinh ngày 7-7-1910, mất ngày 23-6-1942. Quê nội ông ở làng Cẩm Phô, Hội An, Quảng Nam; quê ngoại: phố huyện Cẩm Giàng, Hải Dương. Ông là em ruột của nhà văn Nhất Linh (Nguyễn Tường Tam) và Hoàng Đạo (Nguyễn Tường Long). Thuở nhỏ ông sống với gia đình ở quê ngoại, sau đó theo cha chuyển đến Tân Đệ, Thái Bình. Lớn lên ông ra Hà Nội, học trường Canh nông, trường Albert Sarraut, đỗ tú tài phần thứ nhất rồi ra làm báo.
